KUMO- New Internet search engine

Microsoft tests new Internet search engine. Kumo.com, is an advanced search explorer which will show results on an organized manner like sentence or relation between the words. It is simple and clean look.

While Microsoft employees have admitted publicly that there are branding issues around Live Search, we're not quite ready to stick our heads above the parapet and say that Kumo will be the new brand name to be announced in a 2009 update.
Apparently, Kumo means "cloud" or "spider" in Japanese. The naming and branding issues are being discussed on TechCrunch.

Live was brought in to provide a unifying brand for a group of services including Hotmail, Messenger and Spaces, in preference to using the old MSN (Microsoft Network) branding umbrella. Live Search is at least consistent, whereas Kumo doesn't fit with anything. It's hard to see the logic in that.

Of course, there's no reason why Microsoft shouldn't launch Kumo as well, using the same back end. Perhaps it could win market share in parts of Asia and South America, for example, where Google is less entrenched.

The question is whether Google's dominance is now so great that it's impervious to competition. In sum, if you build a better search engine, people still won't use it, no matter what you call it. And that's assuming Microsoft can build a better search engine, which it has so far failed to do.

Arabic the language for the future

French president Nicolas Sarkozy recently called Arabic, “the language of the future, of science and of modernity,” .

If you do speak Arabic or if you’re trying to learn like I am, then you know that it is an incredibly challenging language. Those challenges extend to the Web where the possibility of finding news and information in standard Arabic script is overwhelming and often incomplete.

Yamli.com is an Arabic transliteration search engine that allows visitors to use their Latin keyboards to search for any Arabic phrase they want. Since there is no proper or exact phonetic match from Arabic to English, it creates a widespread problem on the Web because multiple variations exist for a single word.

Yamli offers a solution in that it allows users to spell the Arabic word the way they think it would be spelled in English. It automatically provides matches from that spelling and other relevant matches from alternate spellings. Yamli also offer serch results both in English on one side and Arabic on the other side.

But, what if you could reduce your electric bill by 10 percent a year just by eliminating "phantom power?" What is phantom power you ask? Phantom power is the current that electrical items continue to draw even when they are not in use. Cell phone chargers, computers, TVs and other electric items all suck electricity even when we're not using them. If you're like most people, you have a schedule that you try to keep to, for instance, how much time you watch TV at night. Here are some easy ways to reduce phantom power from your TV and other items in your home.

How to Reduce Phantom Power From MP3 Players, Cell Phones and Other Small Electronics

  • Take an area of your home or office and make it the centralized charging station.
  • Plug in a multi-outlet surge protector power strip, the type with the on/off switch.
  • Plug all of your small electronics charging cords into this power strip.
When your equipment is charged or not in use, simply turn the switch on the power strip off. Not only will this help reduce your phantom power, but all of your devices will be located in one spot, so you won't have to hear "Where's my iPod?" quite as often.
How to Reduce Phantom Power From TVs, DVD Players and Home Entertainment Systems

  • Plug all of your devices into a multi-outlet surge protector power strip.
  • Plug the power strip into a timer that gets plugged into the wall outlet.
  • Set the timer to turn the power off around the time of night you usually go to bed. If you don't watch TV in the morning before you go to work, set the timer to turn the power back on right before you get home. This way, all night and all day your equipment won't be drawing unnecessary power.
  • Learn how much phantom power a piece of equipment uses before you decide to purchase it.
